I’m reminded of the iconic opening sentence of M. Scott Peck’s 1978 book, The Road Less Traveled, “Life is difficult.”  And so, it is.

It seems as though we are living in perilous times. First, climate change has brought about a radical shift in weather with extreme heat, deluged rain with flooding, more consequential hurricanes and colder winters, not only across our nation but it’s being felt worldwide.

Second, our politics have been kidnapped by the right-wing plutocracy, trying to drive us back to the 18th century. We have a Supreme Court who continues to feed that plutocracy voraciously at the expense of our constitutional precedent. Our economy is upside down driven by the greed of the 1%. Religion has sold itself out to the lowest bidder, ignoring the First Amendment, separation of church and state. I know, economic indicators say that we are experiencing the best economy in 50 years. Wages are up, profits are up, the stock market is booming, inflation is down,

yet, the cost of basic living expenses seems to deny the economic indicators.

We are living in an age of fear. People are fearful of climate change, national dissidence, out of touch politicians, an economy that serves the wealthy, computer scams and hacks, a presidential candidate who wants to be a dictator, and the emergent number of spiders that seem to be overtaking our home space.

In his 1933 inaugural address, Franklin Rosevelt said, regarding the state of the union, that “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” His meaning, I believe, was that you can’t give into the fear that things are bad without resolve because in doing so, it only makes you more fearful and stifles your ability to resolve any of the issues that caused that fear.

An acronym for fear that resonates with me is, False Evidence Appearing Real. Most situations we face that create fear are those we don’t understand. Our experience has not given us any knowledge of this particular issue or event and spooks us into a state of great distress, which is fear. Once we begin working at trying to understand the fearful event and realize a resolve, we understand that it was simply false evidence appearing real.

However, that is not to say that there are real fears that have no foreseeable resolve. I’m sure the families in Gaza, Ukraine and other war-torn countries have a level of fear that eats away at any possibility of change. That fear is a survival fear, which says, “I can’t worry about tomorrow, I have to do what I can do to just survive this day.” Personally, I can’t imagine a greater fear than that.

And, to top that off, we have had two old men running for president of the USA. Some say this is not an election about old men but policy. Be that as it may, it is a policy of and by old men. Hence, a national feeling of, “Is this all there is?” In many cases it will be a notion of holding one’s nose while you check your choice for President.

We all know now that there are no longer two old men running for President. On Sunday, July 21, Joe Biden decided to step away from his 2024 campaign.  He said it was time for younger minds and new energy to bring home the presidency in 2025, and doing so requires that he discontinue his presidential campaign. He feels that it is the best decision for the country and the party. On the one hand it seems like Joe’s decision to step down was purchased by the Dem “Daddy War-Bucks” who holds the cash, saying not another dime until Joe succeeds from the campaign. On the other hand, I believe Joe is very exhausted because of the campaign and trying to run the country. It has taken its toll on him. I accept that reality for Joe and wish him Godspeed as he legislates his way through the last six months of his term. Biden is indeed, one of the very last elder statesmen of our political institution.

Today, as I write this, the GOP has completed their convention and are “riding high” on a horse they are calling unity. Trump’s long-winded speech, outside of a few words in the beginning on unity, was the same energy of lies and deceit that he says at every one of his rallies. He just said this weekend to the Christian community, “give me your vote this time and you will never have to vote again!”  The energy in and of itself may well give the GOP-MAGA’s a boost in the polls. I believe that will only be temporary because a tiger cannot change its stripes and the GOP reality of Project 2025 will wane. And frankly, I’m not sure that his choice of VP, JD Vance, will rally his campaign.

It is interesting that during this GOP convention, the Dem’s found themselves in a divisive mood because they could not decide whether to stick with Biden. The cry is, “He’s too old,” “His mind no longer tracks,” “The polls say he can’t beat Trump now.”  You piss-ant disrespectful democrats (small d intentional), why are you so engaged in polls so far out from November? Current polls, any polls for that matter, are simply polls and mean little so early in the campaign. If history has taught us anything about polls, it’s that they are wrong a lot of the time. The only poll that really matters is the election poll on the ballot on November 5th. Believe that one! The fact that you admit that Biden can’t beat Trump could mean you don’t believe in your product, that what you have to sell the American people is no longer viable under Biden. Joe got us to where we are, and you want to abandon that “greater good energy” for what? And by the way, talking about a mind that does not track, how come no one is talking about Trump?

Nonetheless, Biden has passed the torch and endorsed Kamala Harris as the party’s choice for the next President of the United States. Kamala will certainly jump-start the democratic base and be a formidable candidate to beat Trump. She has already set a record for raising funds, $81 million in the first 24 hours! I’m sure that there is a lot of “hoop jumping” yet to be done before it all comes together for the Convention in August. There is already new life in the Democratic party.

However, this does change the dynamic of the presidential race. It is no longer a race between two old men but between one old man and a younger fire-brand prosecutor. The Rev. Al Sharpton said it this way, “this is now a race between a prosecutor and a felon.”

I have been confident that either a Biden or a Harris will win the Presidential election. Looks like now that will be Harris. So, with a Harris win, Trump and his cronies will lose and hopefully, fade off into the sunset. Let it be so.

However, in saying the above, it requires that we, the “anti-Trump” faction, not give into the fear of a “possible” Trump win. Ignore the polls, they only speak to what people are thinking now, in the moment the poll was taken. We have three and a half months till November 5th, plenty of time for people to change their minds, and they will. Just as light overcomes the darkness, so also, the truth overcomes lies. Hold on to that thought. The False Evidence Appearing Real will dissipate.

Continue to hold Harris, Biden (who still has six months left in his presidency), and the other Dem candidates in positive thought. If you can, send them notes of encouragement to bolster their candidacy, either by email, social media, or hard copy snail mail. And, also if you can, donate $5. I don’t personally believe that this election will be won by who has the most money, but simply by serving the greater good via the truth.

The next thing I want to say may make some of you snicker in disbelief, but I am going to say it anyway. Back in 1969, the Fifth Dimension had a song called the Age of Aquarius. Astrologically, we are in the Age of Aquarius which, according to astrologists (I am not one!), means that we are in a time of significant change and transformation, a time of spiritual renewal. Astrologists now also say that the former planet Pluto (now considered a dwarf) has moved into the path of Aquarius which signals a time of evolution and growth.

What this means, according to astrologists, (as I understand it) is that we are in a new age of positive energy that generates transformation of our social and political structures, as well as our individual souls. Of course you are saying, “Sure as hell doesn’t feel like a positive transformation!” This journey is in the beginning stages and will take time to come to fruition. It will take time to overcome the smoldering hate and dissention left by the Trump years. You can already feel a surgency of new energy around Kamala. Nonetheless, it will take all of us to create a new awareness that we are brothers and sisters of creation, sharing the same DNA of divinity. We all walk on our own path while also respecting the path of others. Our religion is kindness, and our nature is love.

I invite you to walk with me through the next three and a half months knowing that the energy of the Universe (God) is working on behalf of the greater good. I am confident we will survive this as our Republic will continue to be strong.

Can I get an Amen?
